South Africa’s small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) are the lifeblood of the country’s economy—driving innovation, creating jobs, and uplifting communities. Recognising their critical role in combating unemployment and poverty, South African legislation encourages corporates to actively support local businesses through Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) initiatives. Yet for Komatsu South Africa and the Impact Catalyst, this is more than a compliance mandate—it’s a commitment to building self-sufficient, sustainable communities that thrive long after the business lifespan ends.

This ethos was brought to life through a recent milestone - the handover of a brand-new Komatsu Tractor Loader Backhoe (TLB) to Nathi Sonke (Pty) Ltd, an enterprise in civil and construction, based in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. The handover formed part of an Enterprise Development Programme, funded by Komatsu South Africa and implemented in collaboration with its strategic partner, the Impact Catalyst.

“At Komatsu, it’s not just about being compliant,”

explains Reginald Tshabalala, Manager: Employee Relations and Transformation at Komatsu South Africa.

“It’s about going beyond compliance because we understand the importance of ensuring that, where we do business, even after we have left, communities must remain self-sufficient and sustainable.”

The handover is symbolic of Komatsu’s broader commitment to enterprise development that goes far deeper than once-off support. It reflects a long-term approach to empowerment—one that transfers skills, fosters capacity, and opens access to markets.

“This is how we see Nathi Sonke, a business capable of growing within the construction and civil sector, creating jobs, and contributing meaningfully to the local economy and the country’s GDP.”

The Enterprise Development Programme, implemented in collaboration with the Impact Catalyst, is structured to identify promising SMMEs, walk a journey of development with them, and ultimately position them for market success.

“We are excited to be part of this journey with Komatsu South Africa and Nathi Sonke,” says Mlungisi Sindane, ESD Project Manager at the Impact Catalyst.

“This handover speaks to the success of the programme. We walked a rigorous and fulfilling path to identify Nathi Sonke and equip them to thrive. With this asset, we believe they will create jobs and generate revenue which will sustain their business”

The Komatsu TLB, handed over as part of the programme, represents an essential asset for Nathi Sonke’s operations and a stepping-stone to more opportunities.

“Words cannot express what we feel as a team,” Nkosinathi Mphahlaza, Director of Nathi Sonke (Pty) Ltd, said during the handover.

“We have been in business for over a decade and have never been able to purchase a brand-new TLB. This will change the trajectory of our business and enable us to create and explore new opportunities.”

The WB93R-5 TLB is part of Komatsu’s latest generation of backhoe loaders. Designed with customer feedback from across the globe, it delivers top-class performance with a user-friendly design. Key features include an engine power of 74 kW / 99.2 HP @ 2,200 rpm and an operating weight of 8,070 kg. This asset also enables enhanced visibility, improved loading performance, versatility and superior loading capabilities.

“We hope that this machine will be a catalyst for opportunity, enabling Nathi Sonke to compete effectively, scale operations, and secure long-term sustainability,” added Sindane.

As South Africa continues to face a stubbornly high unemployment rate and economic inequality, such strategic partnerships offer a blueprint for real, lasting impact. By investing in local enterprises, transferring skills, and unlocking market opportunities, Komatsu South Africa and the Impact Catalyst are contributing to shifting the trajectory of communities—one SMME at a time.

Words cannot express what we feel as a team. We have been in business for over a decade and have never been able to purchase a brand-new TLB. This will change the trajectory of our business and enable us to create and explore new opportunities.
